Using modern technology and materials, and using the knowledge gained from designing and operating its own dedicated landmine clearance machine, Aardvark has designed flail systems for a number of main battle tanks. The main problems with using tanks for landmine clearance is that they can not go slow enough for effective clearance, and the driver is at the front of the vehicle and thus too close to a mine detonated by a flail.

This was the case for one made for a Centurion tank in 1985.
In 1999 a flail was made for a Leopard tank which had the driver’s position moved to the rear of the tank, and an external auxiliary drive fitted to the tracks.
Rotating chain flails were first fitted to tanks during World War II to clear landmines when the mine menace had become a very serious problem.
